How to Make High Heels Comfortable and Easy to Wear
Here are some ways to make wearing high heels more comfortable and easy to wear.
For moms, it’s not always practical to wear high heels. Especially when the kids start learning how to run or pregnancy leaves a permanent increase in foot size, our high heels usually end up collecting dust in the closet. Unfortunately, the more we don’t use our high heels, the more they are prone to breaking. The soles start to come off because the glue gets brittle or the leather begins crumbling away. But here are some ways to make this style more comfortable so we can wear them with our mom jeans or long skirts.
1. Heel protectors
These are godsends for those high heels that cut into the back of our heels because of friction. These little butterfly-shaped cushions have double-faced tape that we stick onto the back of our high heels and they reduce the amount of friction that cuts our skin in the first place. These are usually available in department stores, Payless, or even online shops on Shopee and Lazada!
2. Arch supports
Especially for moms who have flat feet, certain high heel shoes and other styles are uncomfortable to wear because the arches appear as if they’re “collapsing.” Without the extra support, our ankles end up taking on extra weight and make us more prone to sprains and strains. Closed high heels usually have room for arch supports and all we have to do is slip them in and we’re off!
But if we want to invest in comfortable, everyday pumps and wedges, there are some brands like Hush Puppies or Dr. Kong that already integrate arch supports into their styles.
3. Massaging moisturizer into the heels
Especially when we’re breaking them in, the leather tends to be so hard that it crushes our toes! What some moms like to do is use lotion to soften the material. Whether it’s faux leather or real leather, it’s porous enough to absorb the moisturizer like real skin. It doesn’t have to be the expensive kind of lotion; we just need to be religious in massaging the lotion on the toe of the heels.
And if lotion isn’t available, baby oil works the same way, too!
4. Invest in ballet toe protectors
Ever wonder how ballet dancers can seemingly dance on their tiptoes for hours on end? More experienced and veteran dancers may be used to it but some use silicon toe protectors to prevent the blisters from forming when they’re still starting out! These work well especially with our vintage pointed high heels which tend to squish all our toes together, causing the friction on our smaller toes to create blisters. Some toe protectors even come with sleeves for each toe while there are others that are just one whole slip-on. It depends on how often we wear a particular shoe.
5. Wear tights or stockings!
When we want to rock our favorite high-heel sandals but are still breaking them in, tights or stockings help make the break-in more bearable. Some tights or stockings are made with a thicker material which cushions our skin from the friction from the material. At the same time, it gives us a more formal look when we want to wear it to the office or a night event.
6. Athletic tape for the sides of the feet
Some people have wide feet so what they do to cushion the sides is they put athletic tape on the sides of their feet. That way, even though the high heels are chafing against their big toe and their little toe, it’s the athletic tape that will protect their skin. The best part is, it’s disposable and these kinds of tape are easy to find in sports shops like Toby’s or Olympic Village.
High heels can be the source of our heartbreak
When we become moms, our high heels can be a reminder of how we used to look so fashionable. Unfortunately, pregnancy made our feet swell. While some are lucky to have their feet return to their old size, others not so much. But with these hacks, we can still wear our favorite high heels no matter where we go. There are days when momma wants to look stylish but if we’re going to do so, we will do so in comfort.
