Karylle Joins Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Manila as Mrs. Bucket
The singer and actress will join the cast of the production when it opens in July as the Theatre at Solaire
Families have another reason to look forward to the much-anticipated Manila staging of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory—and it comes with a familiar, well-loved face.
Singer-actress Karylle is set to join the cast as Mrs. Bucket when the musical opens this July at the The Theatre at Solaire, adding a distinctly Filipino touch to the global production.
Announced by GMG Productions on April 13, Karylle will star alongside young talents Oliver T. Wong and Cohen Toukatly, who both take on the role of Charlie Bucket.
Before the announcement, GMG posted a teaser, giving a clue to Karylle’s participation.

A Seasoned Performer Returns to the Stage
Karylle’s casting as Charlie’s loving and resilient mother feels like a natural fit—not only because of her acting range, but also her deep roots in theatre.
Before becoming a household name on television, she built an impressive stage résumé, appearing in productions such as The Sound of Music (as Baroness Elsa von Schraeder), West Side Story (as Maria), The Little Mermaid, Seussical, Cinderella, and the original Filipino musical Rama Hari.
More recently, she appeared in Repertory Philippines’ staging of Private Lives, and portrayed Aurora Quezon opposite Jericho Rosales in Quezon—further cementing her place as a versatile performer across genres.

Still a Favorite Among Families
Decades after Roald Dahl first introduced Charlie Bucket to the world, the story continues to capture the imagination of children and parents alike—through books, films, and now, a dazzling stage adaptation.
Earlier this year, resident director Drew Cipillone, along with lead actors Daniel Plimpton (Willy Wonka) and Cohen Toukatly, visited Manila to share what families can expect from the show.
While the musical stays true to the heart of the original, it also brings something new to the table.
“If you’re in love with the original story and the original movies, there are moments of that still in this musical,” Drew shared. “But there are changes in the story arcs—additional music, physical elements, and emotional layers.”
For Cohen, stepping into Charlie’s shoes is more than just a role—it’s a message.
“Being able to play Charlie shows that you can still be kind, respectful, and hold on to that goodness as you grow.”
A Sweet Takeaway for Families
Beyond the spectacle, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory offers something deeper: a shared experience families can enjoy and talk about long after the curtain falls.
Daniel Plimpton reflected on how meaningful it is to be part of what might be a child’s first theatre experience.
“That idea could honestly bring me to tears. It’s such an honor, and something I’ll never take for granted.”
Cohen hopes audiences leave with more than just catchy songs.
“I hope they’re still singing the songs, talking about the show, and taking home its deeper meaning—while remembering how much fun they had.”
And for parents, Drew highlights what makes the story truly timeless: “Yes, it’s entertainment, but there’s a moral lesson about kindness and honesty—and that those things are rewarded. It’s educational, but wrapped in magic.”
