On August 11, a day before she turned 40, Marian Rivera got one of the biggest blessings – a Best Actress award from Cinemalaya for her role in Balota

The year 2024 has been busy for Marian Rivera. After doing Rewind with her husband Dingdong Dantes, appearing on My Guardian Alien, and being Modern Parenting’s cover star, the actress celebrated her birthday in advance on Sunday, August 11 when she won Best Actress for her role as Teacher Emmy in the Cinemalaya film Balota.

Marian was tied with actress Gabby Padilla for her role in Kono Basho. Dingdong Dantes was present to see his wife’s win.

Sabi ko sa kanya, mahal may offer sa akin ang Cinemalaya. Tatanggapin ko ba?” she recalled the conversation. ” Kakayanin ko ba? Sabi ng asawa ko ‘ kailangan mo gawin yan. Kailangan ipakita kung sino ka.‘”

She also gave special mention to her kids, saying that her youngest Sixto would even count the bruises she had after shooting. It’s one of the best gifts she said.

Most importantly, she dedicated the award to teachers like her character Emmy who sacrificed to protect the vote.

Sa lahat po ng teacher Emmy na matapang na ginagawa ang lahat para protektahan ang boto ng sambayanan kahit pa ang sariling buhay ay mailaan sa panganib – teacher Emmy para sa iyo ito!”

Balota revolves around the story of Teacher Emmy, who guards a ballot box as the elections in their community becomes violent.

The film has become one of most watched films in this year’s Cinemalaya edition, with sold-out screenings during the duration of the festival.
