Remembering Sylvia La Torre: The First Lady of Philippine Television
Sylvia La Torre’s granddaughter confirmed the veteran actress’ death.
Last December 1, Sylvia La Torre’s granddaughter, Anna Marie Pérez de Tagle, confirmed the death of her grandmother on Facebook. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 89 on December 1st at 7:02 AM. Among her grandchildren, Sylvia La Torre was fondly remembered as their vocal coach and often shared her love for her music with them. She is also the beloved grandmother of former Star Magic actress Sarita Pérez de Tagle.
Additionally, she was the 2016 Tandang Sora Awardee.
The First Lady of Philippine Television
Her title as the “First Lady of Philippine Television” came from her dominating the Philippine television waves with her acting and charm. One of Sylvia La Torre’s most memorable performances is from Oras ng Ligaya, a variety show. She would perform in a variety of vaudeville shows at least three times a day in the Grand Manila Opera House.
Queen of Kundiman
However, Sylvia La Torre earned her beloved title, Queen of Kundiman, from the variety of songs she sang that the Filipino American Symphony Orchestra acknowledged and awarded her in 2017 for musical excellence. Some of her beloved songs include “Bituing Marikit,” “Mutya ng Pasig” and “Nasaan Ka, Irog” but in total, she recorded almost 300 songs. She even shared the stage once with her granddaughter, Anna Maria in 2016.
Sylvia La Torre’s contribution to entertainment lives on, even in death.
The Philippines mourns for a great loss in the entertainment industry. But for her family, she is a beloved grandmother and one who often brought joy through song and celebration. Sylvia La Torre’s songs allow her to live on, even in death, as her kundimans continue to be sung by her granddaughter and listened to by the members of her family.
