Timeline: Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady’s Love Story
Let’s take a look back at the love story of Gisele Bündchen, one of the world’s most famous supermodels, and Tom Brady, one of America’s top athletes before the break-up.
On October 28, Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen and Tampa Bay Bucaneers football star Tom Brady confirmed they are divorcing after months of reported tension in their marriage brought on by Tom’s decision to come out of retirement. This marks the end of what many believe was a happy love story of 13 years.
We look back at some of the key moments of the estranged couple’s love story.
December 2006: Getting together
After meeting Tom through a friend, Gisele Bündchen said that she knew Tom Brady was the one. In an interview with Vanity Fair in 2009, she said of the romance: ” The moment I saw him, he smiled and I was like, That is the most beautiful, charismatic smile I’ve ever seen! We sat and talked for three hours. I had to go home for Christmas, but I didn’t want to leave. You know that feeling of, like, you can’t get enough? From the first day we met, we’ve never spent one day without speaking to each other.”
2007: Facing a roadblock
In 2007, the couple faced one of the most difficult moments of their relationship when Tom found out he would be the father of his ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan’s child. Gisele admitted in her book Lessons: My Path to a Meaningful Life that it wasn’t easy for her as they were just 2 months into their relationship.
But she eventually grew to love John Edward, Tom’s son with Bridget who was born in August of that year. She has since treated him like her own son just like how she treats their kids Vivian and Benjamin.
January 2009: Engagement
After two years of dating, Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen got engaged.
February 2009: Wedding
After a brief engagement, Tom and Gisele married in Santa Monica, California. In April of that year, they held another wedding in Costa Rica.
December 2009: Welcoming their first son
On December 2009, the couple announced the arrival of their first son Benjamin.
December 2012: Vivian arrives
Three years after welcoming Benjamin, the couple announced the arrival of their daughter Vivian.
February 2012 to September 2016: Reported tensions in their marriage
Despite making red-carpet appearances and being present in their respective activities, the couple battled several reports of break-ups. In 2016, Tom, who is known to be very private about his personal life save for a few social media messages on Instagram told a Boston radio station 2016 they were okay.
October 2018: Gisele Bündchen gets candid about parenting and relationships
During the release of her book Lessons: My Path to a Meaningful Life, Gisele wrote that her relationship with Tom was tested following the arrival of Benjamin.
“When someone you love is happy, it makes you happy. Or if they’re sad, it makes you sad. You suffer with them and you have joy with them.”
September 2019: Tom opens up about his relationship with Gisele
In one of his interviews, Tom admitted that despite getting support from Gisele on his career as a football player, she is not a big fan of the sport.
“Sometimes I have to hold on hard. But she knows I’m always there for her,” he told Men’s Health magazine that year.
December 2019: The importance of communication
During an interview with E!’s Jason Kennedy, Tom shared one of the key secrets to his marriage to Gisele: communication.
“Clear, like, ‘This is exactly how I’m feeling.’ And current, not like, ‘This happened six months ago.’ And you communicate about it. I think that’s helped us a lot,” he said.
February 2020: 11 years of marriage
The couple posted sweet messages for each other on their 11th wedding anniversary.
April 2020: Checking on the marriage
During an appearance on the Howard Stern show, Tom said that he has been working hard on his marriage with Gisele. ” “She felt like I would play football all season and she would take care of the house, and then all the sudden when the season would end, that I’d be like, ‘Great, let me get into all my other business activities. Let me get into my football training.’ And she’s sitting there going, ‘Well, when are you going to do things for the house? When are you going to take the kids to school and do that?’”
January 2021: By Tom’s side
Gisele and their kids showed support for Tom after winning another NFL championship with the Tampa Bay Bucanneers.
February 2022: Tom Brady announces his retirement from football
Tom announced that he was retiring from playing football to concentrate on his family.
February 2022: 13 years and counting
The couple marked their 13th wedding anniversary by exchanging sweet messages.
August 2022: A birthday greeting
Two months before the reported tension, Gisele greeted Tom on his birthday. In September, reports of a marital rift were circulating, with the people close to them saying they were trying to work on their marriage after Tom decided to un-retire from his football career.
In a September cover interview with Elle for its October issue, Gisele admitted she and Tom had conversations about his decision to un-retire.
” I have definitely had those conversations with him over and over again. But ultimately, I feel that everybody has to make a decision that works for [them]. He needs to follow his joy, too,” she said.
October 2022: Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady’s Divorce
After months of reported tension, both Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady made separate announcements by confirming they were separating. The couple also said that they will continue to co-parent their children and ask for privacy.
