Dina Bonnevie on Extramarital Affairs: “It’s Never The Child’s Fault.”
Dina Bonnevie’s wise words from her interview in 2020 reveal how a young Vico Sotto was affected by her husband’s extramarital affair.
We Filipinos love watching the catfights born out of extramarital affairs on teleseryes. But they’re never that simple—especially when kids are involved. A TikTok video of Dina Bonnevie’s interview in 2020 about when she first met a young Vico Sotto recently went viral. And for good reason, too. She shared how the current Pasig mayor often hid from her as a child because he believed it was his fault. But she shared, “It’s not. It’s not your fault and it was never your fault. So don’t feel that way.”
“A reminder of the sin”
There will always be pain upon discovering an extramarital affair. But while the aggrieved parties are fighting it out, some forget about the children who end up being dragged into the mess. In the video, Dina even recalls that Vico would avoid her at church out of shame.
“For a while nakikita niya ‘ko sa church, umiiwas siya. Parang he didn’t want to see me kasi nga parang I’m reminded of the sin,” shares Dina.
According to the timeline and sources, Vico was born three years before Dina and Vic annulled their marriage. Things became complicated but eventually smoothened out with Dina even revealing that she’s become close friends with Vico’s mom, Coney Reyes. “It took years before we made peace. God is good. We have forgiven each other. He really finds a way to heal our hearts and our relationships.”
The kids should never be blamed for an extramarital affair.
It’s easy for women who are still stinging from feelings of betrayal and pain to unleash their rage on the other woman’s children, hoping to hurt the partner who betrayed them. Children can feel that, too, even if they don’t have a complete understanding of what’s going on. But Dina Bonnevie’s right. An extramarital affair is never the children’s fault. The fault belongs only to the one who insisted on the extramarital affair in the first place.
