DepEd Announces School Calendar for 2025 Begins June 16
The announcement from the Department of Education marks the return of the school calendar to June, effective this year
Summer vacation is only beginning for some students, but parents should be ready for their kids’ school calendar. The Department of Education announced that starting this 2025, the school calendar will revert to June, with June 26 as the start of classes.
“The SY 2025-2026 shall formally open on Monday, June 16, 2025, and shall end on Tuesday, March 31, 2026,” the DepEd Order 12 reads. “It shall consist of 197 class days inclusive of the end-of-school-year rites, or as may be determined by subsequent issuances in case of changes in the school calendar due to unforeseen circumstances.”
Also on the calendar: Brigada Eskwela—DepEd’s nationwide school cleanup and classroom prep program—is scheduled for June 9 to 13, just one week before students head back.

Why the New Switch?
The announcement marks the return of the school year from June to March after it was initially moved to August to May during the past two administrations.
What’s behind the shift? The short answer: summer heat. Last year, as temperatures soared past 40°C in many areas, classes were repeatedly suspended, and some schools had to go fully online during April and May. The extreme weather cut into instructional time and put students’ health at risk.
While the rainy season presents its own challenges (hello, class suspensions!), DepEd is hoping this move will bring more consistency to the school year.
It remains to be seen if this will be better for students, but parents should start preparing their kids for the new calendar during the short breaks they have.
