Ed Sheeran On His ‘Subtract’ Album: “Writing songs is my therapy.”

Ed Sheeran, a dad of two, reveals how his soon-to-be-released album Subtract is his way of making sense of things.

We all have ways to cope with the struggles and stresses of life. Some do it via journaling, others through art, and some through going to therapy. But for Ed Sheeran, a celebrity dad of two, writing songs helped him “make sense of things” especially for his latest album, Subtract. He writes in his Instagram post, “It’s opening the trapdoor into my soul. For the first time, I’m not trying to craft an album people will like, I’m merely putting something out that’s honest and true to where I am in my adult life. This is last February’s diary entry and my way of making sense of it. This is Subtract.”

Life somehow was just out to mess with him. In one month, Ed Sheeran revealed that his wife, Cheery Seaborn, was diagnosed with a tumor when she was pregnant and that they couldn’t remove it until she had the baby. He also lost his best friend, Jamal, and had to defend “his integrity and career as a songwriter” in a court case. “I was spiraling through fear, depression, and anxiety. I felt like I was drowning, head below the surface, looking up but not being able to break through for air,” he confesses.

When all of this happened at the start of 2022, it made him change his view on “his life, his mental health, and ultimately the way he viewed music and art.”

According to his announcements, Ed Sheeran is releasing his album Subtract on May 5.

Dads struggle, too. But they don’t open up with it much.

Finding a healthy way to cope is the best thing anyone can do, but it can go from good to destructive in seconds. Hopefully, with Ed Sheeran opening up about his feelings like these in his latest album Subtract, it would allow other dads to step forward about it as well. Today, he’s a father of two little girls: Lyra Antarctica and Jupiter Seaborn Sheeran.

Ed Sheeran’s most played songs include Galway Girl, Perfect, Shape of You, and Thinking Out Loud.
