Meteor Garden Star Barbie Hsu Dies At 48, And Many Millennials Are Heartbroken

Barbie is known for playing Shan Cai in the Taiwanese drama that captivated Filipinos in 2001

On Monday, February 3, reports circulated that Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu, known for playing Shan Cai in Meteor Garden, died due to pneumonia. After her family confirmed the death of the 48-year-old actress and singer, many fans, most especially the millennials and now parents, took to social media to express shock and grief for the actress who became part of their childhood.

Memories of Barbie

Rainie Yang, who co-starred with Barbie on the show, wrote on social media in Mandarin. “Thank you. I will miss you forever and love you.”

Ken Chu, who played Xi Men in the show, posted a photo of Barbie alongside his group mates Jerry Yan, Vaness Wu, and Vic Chou on Instagram stories. 

Actress Kim Chiu recalled the time she would just go home to catch the show. 

Naalala ko after school magmamadali ako umuwi  para mapanood lang ang Meteor Garden, pag di ko na maabutan makikinood ako sa karinderya  sa labas ng school namin. OMG!!!! I love you SanChai!!!! May you rest in peace! Thank you sa makulay namin childhood. Pigtail braids!”

Several people on social media recalled the time Barbie came to the Philippines at the height of the Meteor Garden craze, posting clips from the concert and fan meet.

One netizen commented that the show’s theme song “Qing Fei De Yi,” has a different meaning now that Barbie is gone.  

Who Is Barbie Hsu?

Barbie or Shi-yuan Hsu is a Taiwanese actress and singer. Dubbed Big S, she captivated the Filipino audience when she starred alongside Jerry Yan, Vaness Wu, Ken Chu, and Vic Chou in Meteor Garden as the feisty Shan Cai, who earned the heart of Dao Ming Si (Yan).

Hsu would also star in Meteor Garden II, Mars with Vic Chou, and Eternity: A Chinese Story. She appeared in movies like The Ghost Inside and My Kingdom.

Hsu and sister Dee also performed as members of S.O.S. and even came to the Philippines. The sisters later became hosts in Taiwan.

She was previously married to Chinese businessman Wang Xiao Fei, with whom she has two children. In 2022, she married Koo Jun-yup, a South Korean DJ and music producer.
