Sitti Navarro-Ramirez: The Sound of Music and Motherhood
Girl mom Sitti Navarro-Ramirez talks about how harmony and happiness have guided her music and family life.
This story of Sitti Navarro appeared in the Modern Parenting Mother’s Day and Father’s Day May 2024 issue.
Sitti Navarro-Ramirez, at one point, was a household name. Notable for crooning bossa nova hits and putting a bossa nova spin on Filipino songs, her soft yet warm voice brought harmony to many Filipino homes — be it the background to a slow Sunday morning or a lively afternoon with guests.
Since then, Sitti has gone on to experiment with her sound, delving into electronic dance music and some ballad-like pieces. Whatever place she’s in musically, she always manages to arrive at that harmony, which she calls “a kind of release.”
The soothing song of motherhood
“It is being gifted with the assurance that one can fly musically, knowing that where a note may go, it is supported securely,” says Sitti. “It allows me the space to sing freely; there is an absolute joy in delving into it, and in knowing that I have contributed to those precious moments of creating music.”
But harmony isn’t just limited to her musical pursuits. As a girl mom, Sitti’s found ways to arrive at harmony within her own family, despite the moments of chaos that sometimes pop up. “When I am with my children, I have peace, I have assurance, I have joy,” she says. “Motherhood is like that. It’s providing space so my little ones can fly. I’m hoping that they would feel free to pour themselves into the music of life knowing that my bass line will always be steadily there, keeping rhythm for them.”
After all, for Sitti, being a mom is something that teaches you about yourself — particularly about love and how to love. “Because you’ll be willing to do anything for your children, something changes in your heart, so you are willing to go above and beyond what you would usually do for another person,” she says.
Pouring herself into motherhood and music
But Sitti also knows that this may be easier said than done. When asked what she would tell her mother (who is now departed) now that she too is a mother, she says she hopes to thank her for all the things she had done and to forgive herself for the things she felt she couldn’t do for them. “If she felt that she failed in that regard, I just want to let her know that we are okay,” Sitti admits.
Motherhood is a lot, and once in a while, a breather from all the responsibilities is needed. Moms are like superheroes, courageous and resilient. “I always find myself thanking God for giving me the chance to experience so many moments in my life. I thank Him for allowing me to pour myself completely into my music just as I am able to completely immerse myself into being a mom to my two girls,” Sitti concludes.
