Sonic The Hedgehog 3: Why We Know Families Will Love It

We thought Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie was just a kid’s superhero anthropomorphic movie. Turns out, it’s a lot more than that!

After watching the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie, we can see why it outdid Mufasa at the box office. Sure, based on the promotional poster, it can look and feel like a typical kid’s movie (because that’s what it is!), but even parents who are kids at heart can enjoy it! Besides improving many of the superpowers’ effects that the kids love, it also holds a lot of similarities to the original content — something many parents who grew up with the SEGA Dreamcast or played the Sonic the Hedgehog games when they were younger probably appreciate.

Why we know kids would like Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie

Besides the adrenaline-filled banters and moments of the cocky blue hedgehog Sonic, he now has friends in the form of Tails and a former villain turned ally, the red Echidna Knuckles. The trio then gets involved in a variety of things which is a plot that the kids love — a group of friends just going on adventures and having fun. It mirrors their desire to see the world on their terms and pace.

The animation and the combat scenes prove how far animation has evolved with the latest character, Shadow, being the obvious foil and rival to Sonic. The speed, the power, and even the fluid movements — he’s a worthy adversary. With almost the same powers (and possibly more), he’s the kids’ idea of an “edgy” rival or villain. The jet-black and red-streaked hedgehog is a match for the trio, which makes the battle and even the tag-team battle later on even more fun for them to watch.

Will parents enjoy it?

Every parent has an inner child and millennials cannot deny the presence of the blue hedgehog in their childhood. Not only was Sonic the Hedgehog available on Disney channel and comic books years ago but, it was also playable on different video game consoles. Starting from the SEGA Dreamcast, the franchise eventually branched out to the Sony game consoles like the PlayStation 2 (PS2). It’s a nostalgia trip for the gamer parents, especially for those familiar with the game Sonic Heroes and Shadow’s spin-off game: Shadow the Hedgehog.

Besides the voice cast being star-studded (with Idris Elba as Knuckles and Keanu Reeves as Shadow), Jim Carrey had a brand of humor that made it palatable for adults. It broke the fourth wall and had everyone at the edge of their seats as the humor was somewhat reminiscent of Jim Carrey’s famous movie, Pet Detective Ace Ventura which is considered a classic comedy for many.

So yes, it’s definitely worth the watch!

Catch Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie in PH Cinemas soon!

It looks like the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie will be making its way to PH Cinemas soon. While it’s already showing in other countries, families in the Philippines will have a chance to see it this coming January 15, 2025. As of now, it’ll be shown in the regular cinemas. Not the premium ones. It may be running alongside some Metro Manila Film Fetsival (MMFF) movies as well so, be sure to check the mall’s cinema schedules before making a trip!
