Sylvia Sanchez Opens Up About “Letting Go” of Arjo Atayde

Celebrity veteran actress and mom Sylvia Sanchez opened up about “slowly coming to terms” with letting go of her son, Arjo Atayde.

Every parent will face the day their kids leave the nest. For most Filipinos, it’s when their children decide to get married. As Arjo Atayde and Maine Mendoza’s wedding date draws nearer, Sylvia Sanchez counts the days down. In an interview with Inquirer posted last December 5, 2022, she revealed that it was something she has to slowly accept. “When I learned he will propose to Maine, I said that I have to be okay with the idea that he eventually will physically leave us. I can’t meddle with his life anymore the way I do while he is still in my home,” admits Sylvia.

“Tears of joy”

We moms always try to suppress our tears. But it’s different when the child leaves the nest, something Sylvia admits is difficult. “I don’t cry easily about stuff like this, but I’m sure there will be tears of joy on their wedding day. It’s really difficult to let go of a child.”

She also revealed that both Arjo Atayde and Maine Mendoza were planning to have kids right away. And according to her, Arjo and Maine were planning to tie the knot in 2023 and were already searching for a wedding venue.

“They could still change their minds and do it in 2024. I don’t want to pester Arjo when it comes to this aspect of his life. At 32, he is already mature enough to handle this,” Sylvia admitted.

Maine Mendoza, meanwhile, is 27 years old.

Marriage doesn’t mean the end of being a parent

Despite weddings being a happy occasion, it may feel like doomsday for some parents. However, it can be the start of a new era: being a grandparent — something Sylvia is looking forward to. “What I kept telling them was that I’m already in my 50s and I want grandkids from them. If they’re busy taping, they can always leave their child to me. This will be my first apo, unlike Maine’s parents who already have several grandkids. I will just inform them where to find us, be it in Manila, Batangas, or anywhere,” she laughs.

Although she’ll be like every lola who spoils their grandkids, she knows her boundaries of where fun and discipline need to reconcile. “I intend to spoil my grandkid. Seriously, I will try my best to help them raise a good child. I just don’t want to give advice unless they ask for it,” she adds during the interview.
