Teens and Drinks: Teaching Them How To Drink Safely and Moderately

Our teens will eventually be curious enough to drink alcohol. Instead of banning alcohol, here’s how we can use what we learned at the Boozy Fest: Fusion of Flavors to teach them how to drink at home.

Since the pandemic, most drinking has been done at home. We’ve probably ordered from Boozy several times to fill up our beer stash only to find out that someone’s been snatching our drinks! After a bit of sleuthing, we find a bunch of empty beer bottles hidden under our teen‘s bed or in their trash cans. Looks like they’ve been having their own e-numans with friends! Instead of scolding them, we’ve come up with ways after joining the Boozy Fest to teach our teens how to drink safely and moderately.

Here are some ways on how to teach your teens to drink safely and moderately

1. Have one night where you and your teens drink together

Drinking has always brought friends together so, it might bring you and your teen closer. Since the pandemic won’t let them go out for a while, we can try setting up an inuman session. San Miguel may be the usual but our teens might prefer Smirnoff, which the Boozy Fest recommended to drink with burgers. It’s a lot healthier and possibly cleaner than eating typical beer bites like chicharong bulaklak. For movie inuman night, a bottle of Chivas XV and Creamy Parmesan Popcorn ought to spike it up.

2. Have different kinds of dining

Our teens won’t only drink during casual outings. Formal outings like weddings and even meetings when they start working will have alcohol. During the Boozy Fest, we were recommended to drink wine for more formal outings. Wines are usually the ones served during formal gatherings, usually either red or white. They sometimes have champagne. What we can do is when we have steak night, bring out the goblets (maybe not the expensive ones for those who have butterfingers) and have Boozy pick up you and your kids some Barefoot Sangria or Red Wine to enjoy with a perfectly grilled steak.

3. Stick to shots to find their limit

Most of the time, your teens’ drinking parties will be done either with shots or bottles of beer. Some drinks like Vodka and Tequilla often come in shots. Whiskeys come in a different glass and are usually served on the rocks. But for the sake of finding their limit, drink some shots with them. It’s in small amounts and you can easily arrest the problem if they’re allergic to malt or any components in the alcohol.

At least if you’re at home with them drinking shots, you can cut them off if they’re getting tipsy. For Vodka, Boozy should have Absolut in its coffers and Jose Cuervo for tequila. To help them clear the hangover, antioxidants such as Vitamin C can help their livers flush out the remaining alcohol.

4. Make a mindfulness exercise out of it

Each drink has its own personality and story, based on how it was made. Chivas XV, being made in sherry caskets, has a creamy flavor that works so well with cheese. Chivas XVIII (18) has 85 unique flavor notes that are quite a joy to describe. Teaching your teens how to describe the booze they are drinking also keeps them safe: they’ll know if their drink might be spiked or not. Teach them how to describe via smell, appearance, viscosity, and even unique tastes.

5. Show other ways alcohol can be used

If your teens are just in love with the culinary arts, alcohol will eventually be a part of their lives. Something we saw from Boozy Fest’s line-up of chefs like Chef Miguel from Burger Beast. The majority of their on-the-job training will be in hotels that need them to drink. They’ll also be dealing with recipes that use wine like Chicken Marsala or beer-battered fish. They’ll need to learn the different notes eventually. Plus, with you at the stove, you can control how much alcohol goes in—to keep the drinking or consumption safe.

Teens will end up drinking eventually!

While we don’t want our teens to wreck their livers from drinking, we know that drinking is a major part of social gatherings and Philippine culture. Boozy PH also revealed during the Boozy Fest: Fusion of Flavors that they offer masterclasses to further enhance you and your teens’ knowledge of alcohol. So come the day that they’ll be able to go out again and have some fun, you’ll know that they’re more than prepared to go drinking and that they’ll come home safely.
