Why Filipino Families Relate to Bluey, the Aussie Dog Who’s Taken the World by Storm
Acting Australian ambassador to the Philippines, Dr. Moya Colett, says Bluey’s theme of family mirrors both Australian and Filipino values
Bluey, the lovable Australian children’s show, has become a global sensation since its debut in 2018. At a recent pop-up event in SM Megamall, Acting Australian Ambassador to the Philippines, Dr. Moya Colett, spoke about how the Heeler family—Bluey, her little sister Bingo, and their parents, Mum Chilli and Dad Bandit—has taken the world of children’s entertainment by storm.
Why Bluey Resonates With Families Everywhere
During her speech, Dr. Colett shared why the show became such a cultural phenomenon for Australians.
“Everyone knew Peppa Pig, Cocomelon, and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, but Bluey felt like something she said. “It was a uniquely Australian show—with cricket and barbecues, and Christmas swings. Everything from the houses to the accents to the dogs themselves—heelers, which are iconic Australians.”
Yet what made Bluey truly universal, she said, was its theme.
“I think Bluey speaks to the universal experience of parenting. But I also think it highlights the appeal of Australian values and culture,” she added.
“This is a kids’ show that adults also love. It’s not preachy, it’s not saccharine, it’s not annoyingly cheesy. It’s real—and it’s hilarious.”

Heartfelt, Hilarious, and Sometimes Tearjerking
Dr. Colett emphasized that Bluey captures the realities of family life, with all its laughter, chaos, and challenges.
“I think all parents recognize so many of the experiences that hit close to home,” she shared. “I’m sure many of you watching Bluey, like me, have been caught off guard by those poignant moments, where you suddenly find yourself in tears over a show about a family of cartoon dogs.”
She pointed out that the show also reflects deeper Australian values—ones that Filipinos can easily relate to.
“They love their communities and they love their friends. And we help each other to persevere through tough times. And for me, that’s something that connects Australia and the Philippines.”
Filipino-Australian Connections Go Beyond TV
Dr. Colett also spoke about the strong ties between the two countries. With a large Filipino community in Australia and many Australian businesses employing Filipinos, the bonds run deep.
“Bluey is just one of the many cultural threads connecting our people. As we head toward the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Australia and the Philippines next year, I hope Bluey continues to bring us even closer together.”
From Australia to the World
Bluey’s influence goes far beyond the screen. The series has spawned merchandise including books, an album, a LEGO collection, and streaming partnerships. It’s one of the most-watched children’s programs worldwide.
At the heart of the show is Bluey herself—an energetic Blue Heeler pup who transforms everyday moments into magical family adventures. Her boundless imagination pulls her family and the whole neighborhood into games that are both hilarious and deeply touching.
Since launching, Bluey has won several major awards, including the 2019 International Emmy Kids Award and the 2022 BAFTA for the Children & Young People Award in the International category.
